This would suit a showmans waggon or living van. It is one of the most detailed and ornate cast iron brackets made, with a hollow'amphora' in the centre from which the flowers burst forth, and more'relief' than most. The basket is marked inside FS Co for Falk Stadelmann (The Veritas company) and the Registered Design, No 316912, dating to 1898. The bracket back also has two Rd numbers that date. Probably a little too fancy and large for a shepherds hut.
The overall projection from the wall (to edge of shade) is 15 inches, 13&1/2 to rim of basket, and overall height from lowest part of bracket to top of chimney is 20 inches. The cast iron has been cleaned and lacquered , and retains a lot of its original copper bronzed finish, and the original copper ball nuts to the pivot rod. As you can see in pictures 6&7 the lower screw hole (originally same as top one) has been damaged, doubtless due to over tightening or uneven wall. It has been carefully ground to'fit in' with the pattern and 2 smaller screw holes drilled into the pattern. The reverse side, hidden in use, has been filled with epoxy filler to give the casting some support.
As you can see this is almost invisible when fitted. The bracket has an unusual feature, see picture 8, a short spring, fitted in a special recess in the swivel lugs, acts as a brake and stops the bracket wobbling. This may be a special feature for caravan use to prevent the lit lamp shifting if the van rocks in the wind a little. The lamp font is a heavy quality copper and has been polished as it was very dirty. There are no leaks , splits or dents.
The burner has been lightly cleaned and is fitted with a new old stock wick, winds perfectly, no damage or splits. Some additional soldering to shade support legs, shade gallery is secure, stands straight and no wobbles. Lamp has correct chimney, correct flame spreader and a superb, eggshell thin, opal glass shade. As you can see the lamp works well and gives a bright light and burns cleanly and without smell once the chimney is warmed through if you use clean paraffin. Compact lamp (good for heat too).
If used in a vehicle it would need the lamp to be lifted down and stowed away before moving the van. If left complete when van or boat moved it would get broken! The empty bracket will also need to be tied against wall to prevent it thrashing about. If used in a caravan or boat need to be aware of heat output from the chimney, wooden ceilings above may need protection with a'smoke consumer' or heat deflector. The use of oil lamps was one reason that Showman's waggons often had'clerestory' or'lantern' roofs, giving more headroom and ventilation. Will be carefully packed to arrive in good condition.
