This is a quite rare example of an early student oil lamp. I have only had this one example of this model of student oil lamp in all the years I have been collecting them. The brass makers plaque on the brass wick barrel states "Patented March 10 1833 CA Kleemans CF Hinricks New York, Sole Agent US" I have looked at the date under a magnifying glass and cannot determine if it says 1803 or 1833 but have assumed the later date.
The period antique white glass shade fits neatly into the 7 inch fitter rim and is made from delicately thin glass in keeping with the lamp. It is a fine antique example with just the usual small flea bites around the fitter rim and usual slight manufacturing blemishes but otherwise in fine condition. These student oil lamps used to work on colza oil but will work with kerosene if the reservoir is only partially filled.
These graceful looking lamps were ideal for reading when produced as they didn't cast any shadow on the book or manuscript and hence were named Student Lamps. They do look superb on a desk or table and when lit certainly create a real atmospheric feel to a room especially on a cold winters night! The chimney is a rare centre tapered one "made in Prussia" and claimed to be "double strength". The marking on the chimney states "Registered tested fireproof", with a logo of a man clubbing a lion!!And around the logo the words "Select Quality Double Strength". Below the logo it states "Made in Prussia". The brass chimney support which also moves the wick up and down when turned has been bent at some time in the past and is a little distorted and slightly dented but this in no way affects how it functions.
The wick moves up and down smoothly when this chimney holder is turned. The cost the EU should be a lot less than the maximum quoted but it seems I have to give a single rate regardless of its destination.
