Joseph Hinks worked in Birmingham and patented improvements to oil lamps. Marketing the resultant Duplex lamp. 1862 the company was known as James Hinks and Son. In 1864 they developed the Patent Duplex Lamp which used two wicks instead of one and gave out twice the light. The fire had bases in London and Birmingham and important customers were railway companies, and specialist lamps for India. They developed decorative lamps using designs from Europe, and their lamps became the byword for artistic beauty. The factory closed in 1929. The company was incorporated in 1873.The burner has Hinks and Son stamped on the top. The shade measures 6.75" across the top and 3.75" across the base opening. It is of height 7.75.
