Victorian 3 dolphins bronze astral oil lamp Jno. Williams NYC 1884 Tiffany & Co

Here is a gorgeous solid bronze astral oil lamp signed by the famous foundry John Williams, Inc. John Williams was an employee of Tiffany & Co. Until he left to begin his own foundry shop in 1872 in New York, incorporated in 1905 and dissolved in 1956.

Williams (as the firm was known) specialized in bronze casting and architectural pieces, being the foundry of choice for Daniel Chester French, Augustus Saint-Gaudens and many other top American sculptors. His large works, particularly memorials and statuary, can be seen all over the country. I found something of a company history from a History of Real Estate, Building and Architecture in New York City during the Last Quarter of a Century (1898) that speaks to the important nature of Mr.

William's firm and have included here in the photos. The lamp features three old-fashioned dolphins or sea monsters, fully formed of cast bronze that exhibit superior workmanship. Each figure has finely rendered scales and fins with wonderful leafy tail. These support a columnar shaft with bulbous turnings and acanthus leaf design.

Above that is a pierced ball cast on three sides, each with mermaid mask flanked by double dolphins and rococo scrolling, mirroring the dolphin figures at base. Inside of the pierced ball is a brass oil font that originally held lamp oil. The lamp has been expertly electrified to take a single, standard bulb. The cord is newer with in-line on/off switch.

Originally this lamp would have been topped with a chimney and a large round ball shade and the 4 fitter would still accommodate these. However it comes with a reproduction transfer etched shade today. Height: 33" with shade, 27" without. Lamp is heavy, weighing 16 lbs. Condition: lamp is in superb condition and was beautifully restored some years ago. There is one small ding to acanthus leaf shaft, as noted by my finger in the picture.

No other damage to note. As I've said, the original shade is long gone but the chimney base and fitter could accommodate a 4 Gone with the Wind style shade of your choosing. The item "Victorian 3 dolphins bronze astral oil lamp Jno.
