The font is molded with elaborate designs. It still has a lid for filling. The burner extends upward from the font as would be expected. The base also has elaborate designs. The stem has been decorated with dozens of concentric rings, somewhat like barley twist.
It is tall and thin to make it easy for diners to see one another with the lamp in the middle of the table, hence the name banquet lamp. Such a lamp would have provided the best possible lighting for a dinner party in the era before electricity. We believe this lamp dates to the early 1900s. The Rochester is molded into the top of the font, as you can see in the last photo.
The lamp stands 37 inches high (94 cm) from the tabletop to the top of the clear glass chimney. The height from the tabletop to the foundation that holds the globe is about 22.5 inches (57 cm). The round red globe measures about 9 inches in diameter (23 cm). No chips or cracks on the red globe or the tall chimney.
