For sale is this unique and uncommon oil lamp from Lion Lamp Works, and was made by Prince and Symmons London. This company made the ORIGINAL oil and paraffin lamps in England and were active from 1862 - 1888.
I would speculate this lamp was made somewhere between 1862 and 1888? (See image 20 for the brand name and maker).Condition - the lamp is in almost pristine condition and it appears that it may never have been used as an oil lamp. There are no scratches, cracks, dents or any other damage on the glass or other components other than tarnish and heavy patina. All component parts are original and the fit together is perfect.
The lamp parts are non magnetic except for a couple of the areas where the body styles change where it is slightly magnetic. The top cranberry glass is not cracked and has a beautiful floral motif. There are bulbous areas of clear glass within the pink colored area which is finely and intricately etched. The glass is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen and is of the highest quality. There is a separate hurricane style clear glass shade which goes inside the cranberry glass shade.
The lamp itself is comprised of a number of separate sections with different intricate motifs on each. There are floral motifs, lion heads, lion dogs? Beautiful women, grapes with humming birds? And other types of intricate patterns or symbolism. There are beautiful proud alabaster lions on the side looking like they are on guard.
Every component from the top to the bottom is of the finest quality materials with quite stunning and intriguing intricate design. The meaning and understanding of the vast amount of different designs throughout the oil lamp indicates this probably was owned by a very wealthy, elite and prestigious family back in the mid to late 1800's. With the various motifs, especially the Fu Dogs or Lion Dogs if that is what they represent, it appears this rare artifact may never have been made for use as an oil lamp but instead was made more as a symbolic possession for someone representing wealth and prosperity with the guardian lions and/or dogs as protectors? The birds, or butterflies around the grapes may represent abundance? There is just too much intricate designs and patterns to understand the real meaning, especially from something over 150 years old.
I doubt there is another lamp like this which has survived this long, in this pristine of condition. The patina is fabulous with a bright blue hue in places. The lamp is multiple tiered with different dimensions. Silver base - 28.5 cm's (11 1/4 inches) height, 14.5 cm's (5 3/4 inch) base diameter & weighs 2 kg 142 grams(4 lbs 11 1/2 oz's).Cranberry glass shade - 12 cm's (4 3/4 inches) height, 13.4 - 15.3 cm's (5 1/4 - 6 inches) upper scalloped edge diameter, 7 cm's (2 3/4 inches) bottom diameter & weighs 229 grams (8 oz's). The total weight of the lamp complete is 3 kg 230 grams (7 lbs 1 1/8 oz's).
