Heavy 19th C Burnished Cast Metal Oil Lamp Base Unusual Battle Portrayal
HEAVY 19TH C BURNISHED CAST METAL OIL LAMP BASE UNUSUAL BATTLE PORTRAYAL. SUPERB LATE 19TH CENTURY CAST METAL OIL LAMP BASE. This very decorative oil lamp base i believe dates to the last quarter of the 19th century. The oil lamp base stands approximately 24.1cm high with a base diameter at its widest point of 13.5cm. I believe the whole base is made from cast metal but has been'bronzed' and burnished.
The pedestal base is extremely decorative with a very unusual design depicting possibly natives in confrontation with soldiers. The urn base shows different scenes forming a chain of events leading to fighting. The base has decoration of stylised fish and the top of the font has interwoven weapons from the two sides.
The top of the urn lifts off to show the metal font which is in good condition. This in turn rises up to the neck where there is a screwfit collar which supports the burner.
The collar measures internally 3.1cm. Condition is good commensurate with age and use. A truly unusual decorative piece best appreciated through the many photographs.
