Antique Silver Plated Oil Lamp Hukin Heath Drop In Hobnail Font Martins Burner

Stunning antique silver plated oil lamp by Hukin and Heath. The oil lamp has a beautiful silver plated base with an arts and crafts design of a Doric column with scrolling supports that terminate with an ivy leaf. The deeply hobnail cut font drops neatly into the "basket" and has a star cut base and silver plated collar. The burner is silver plated and the buttons are both marked "Martins patent", an unbranded Kosmos type chimney is present. The wick winder works well and a new wick has been fitted.

The integrated silver plated gallery supports a milk glass cowl shade. The underside of the lamp has the marks for Hukin & Heath along with the model number 13049/5.

All components are in very good condition as is the plate. The firm, active as manufacturing silversmiths and electroplaters, was established in Birmingham in 1855.

In 1875 the firm entered its mark in Birmingham Assay Office, while in 1879 the founders Jonathan Wilson Hukin and John Thomas Heath entered their mark in London Assay Office. The firm was active at Imperial Works, Great Charles Street, Birmingham and in the showrooms at 19 Charterhouse Street, London. Hukin retired in 1881 and in 1886 J. Heath continued the partnership with John Hartsghorne Middleton. In 1904 the business was converted into a limited liability company under the style Hukin & Heath Ltd.

The firm went out of business in 1953. The firm is well known for its production in the 1870s and 1880s of silver and electroplated wares under the guidance of Dr.
