Antique Oil Lamp Hinks Burner Wedgwood Black Transfer Ware

Stunning Antique Oil Lamp standing 54cm tall. The lamp has a glossy black glazed terracotta stepped plinth, with brass beaded foot upon which stands the ceramic urn shaped base and font. Both base and font have a pretty salmon pink ground with black transfer ware floral pattern with apricot coloured foot rim and band to the top. The font slots neatly into the base which is marked 104 (impressed) and 1104 (painted) - this could only be seen when the lamp had been dismantled for the purpose of cleaning however, photographs of these marks have been provided. The font carries the impressed number 104.

The style of this lamp and the impressed numbers lead me to believe that the ceramic portion was made for Hinks by Wedgwood. This is an educated guess and by no means definitive. The font has a brass lugged type collar fully marked "Hinks & Sons Patent" and also a small brass plaque with the original retailers name J Bruford George St. The Duplex Burner is also Marked "Messengers Patent" and again the Wick winder buttons are marked with the retailers name. The burner has a working key-turn rise and fall mechanism, working snuffer levers, a Griffin Brand flat bulge chimney and new wicks have been fitted.

A good quality gallery supports an opaque moulded glass lamp shade with frilled rim and scrolling leaf and floral pattern.
