Antique Oil Lamp Doulton Lambert For Hinks Etched Antique Shade

Antique Oil Lamp Doulton Lambert For Hinks Etched Antique Shade Benetfinks burner. Stunning Hinks lamp from 1882. The lamp stands 66cm tall to the top of the glass chimney with a diameter of 18cm at the base. The weighted base plate is marked J.

Hinks and Son Ltd 2451 which is encased in a heavy stepped brass base that supports the body of the lamp. When the brass base is removed, the back-stamps of the Doulton component is revealed. There is an impressed Doulton Lambeth 1882 mark, the other is an inscribed monogram which is presumably the mark of the individual who carried out the applied decoration.

The body and top section of the lamp was made by Doulton (Lambeth) and has an all over pattern of stylised blue and green flower motifs on a treacle glazed ground, with a band of cushion cut style motifs both to the top and bottom of the main body. The flower motifs follow on to the lid, which also has a beaded blue band. The burner is a lugged Hinks Duplex and the wick winder button is marked Benetfink London. BENETFINK LONDON I believe refers to the retailer Benetfink & Co who were Ironmongers from Cheapside in London from 1845 until 1907 when they were taken over by Gamages.

The burner has a working wick winder and two wicks, a key lift mechanism for ease of lighting, working snuffers with a hanging brass weigh on the snuffer lever. A brass gallery that supports the shade completes the burner. The removable top section has a brass collar on the top that the burner sits into and is clearly marked Hinks & Sons. A brass reservoir, that doesn't leak, is fixed to the underside. The pretty acid etched tulip shaped shade, has an art nouveau stylised floral pattern, frilled rim and measures 165mm tall with has a diameter of 212mm and 102mm (4 fitter) at the base.

The lamp has a clear glass chimney marked Fire Proof at the base. For more oil lamps please see Sellers Other Items.
