Antique (circa1890) Painted Royal Blue Porcelain Oil Lamp-cranberry Tulip Shade

AN ANTIQUE VICTORIAN "SAMUEL MESSENGER" BANQUET OIL LAMP. THIS STRIKING ANTIQUE VICTORIAN OIL LAMP STANDS ON A SQUARE ORNATE BRASS FOOT SUPPORTING THE VIOLET PORCELAIN TROPHY STYLE BODY WHICH IS HAND PAINTED WITH TWO DIFFERENT PANELS OF FLOWERS AND DECORATED WITH SWAGS OF WHITE AND GILT LEAVES. THE CUT GLASS DROP IN FONT HAS A BAYONET FITTING COLLAR FOR THE MESSENGER BURNER.

Samuel S Messenger & Sons. Founded before 1835 in Gloucester Place, Alston Street, Birmingham, moved to 19&20 Broad Street before 1888, making chandeliers, candelabra, lamps and gas fittings, exhibitor at 1851 Great Exhibition and others. The name occurs in the 1810s as Messenger and Phipson of Broad Street, Birmingham, manufacturers of'plated' goods. Ceased trading in the early 1930s.

THE BURNER IS A TWIN 1" WICK WITH EXTINGUISHER AND RAISING LEVER TO ENABLE LIGHTING OF THE WICK WITHOUT REMOVING THE CHIMNEY, WITH TWIN BLACK THUMB WHEELS BOTH MARKED "MESSENGER No 2 PATENT. BASE WIDTH - 6 (15CM).

FINISHED WITH AN ORIGINAL FINE ACID ETCHED CRANBERRY TULIP SHADE (IN SUPERB CONDITION). (INCLUDING AN ORIGINAL CRYSTAL GLASS FIREPROOF CHIMNEY). THIS OIL LAMP IS IN EXCELLENT, LIGHTLY CLEANED, ANTIQUE CONDITION AND IN FULL WORKING ORDER.
